Gene grew up an hour over the mountains from the Mojave Desert. As a teenager he would drive out to the desert’s edge, walk across the hills and along the riverbeds, taking in the expansive view of the lower desert floor and its inherent narrative. In 1979 we moved the sculpture studio to New York City, and he began thinking about the landscape from a sculptural point of view. Most of these works are hollow-form steel and many are quite large.
