The Gathering was created for “Construction in Process, Back in Lodz”, a show first begun in the context of the Solidarity movement. Held in 1990 in various newly reclaimed historic buildings in Lodz, Poland, the kinetic sculpture Gathering was built for the citizens of the city. The fabrication took place at Techma, an enormous communist era factory with obsolete tools but a spirit big enough for this monumental sculpture. In the process of digging the footings for the installation in a downtown park it was discovered that the park was the site of a forgotten World War II shelter. Steel, paint, bearings, 20 x 24 x 12 ft., completed 1991, Gene Flores.
